A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD

Greetings, and thank you for knocking at our virtual door! We’re so glad you’re here and hope that you will find information that is both helpful and hopeful.  If you don’t know anything about us, here is a brief introduction…

In various forms the Jefferson Street Center has been not just a presence in, but a part of, the Washington Heights community for 33 years.  Founded in 1987 through a partnership between the then Southeast 9th Ward Neighborhood Association and Hanover Presbyterian Church, the Center operated the First Step Child Care Center for 23 years.  It was created in response to the community’s desire for a quality local, affordable, childcare center.

With the closing of First Step, in 2019 a new board was formed, with new by-laws, and a new name: The Jefferson Street Center.  With the new name came a new mission:

The purpose of the Center shall be to promote social justice for all, with a special emphasis on improving the quality of life for individuals and families living in the surrounding community. The Center will work with the community to identify needs and will seek the community’s support through communication with residents, local neighborhood associations, businesses, and institutions. The Center will seek to foster cooperation among community groups and residents to solve problems of mutual concern through a variety of service and support programs.

JSC is a grassroots community-based, nonprofit organization that seeks to be a catalyst for positive social change. Our goal is to gather community people, players, and partners in order to harness and direct energy and resources to improve the common good.

As you peruse our website, we invite you to do so with the question: where do I fit in? If you don’t come up with an answer, be in touch and we can help you!  And if you do have an answer, be in touch and you can help us!  In either case, together we will change our little part of the world.

Sincerely,

The Rev. Andrew W. Jacob,
President of the Board of Directors
Jefferson Street Center, Inc.
